Maine hobby drone registrations surge 160 percent in 2017
The number of hobbyist drones registered in Maine jumped to 7,416 by the end of January 2018, a nearly 160 percent increase from February 2017, according to Federal Aviation Administration data.
The figures show that the number of drones more than doubled over the year in Maine’s most populated areas. Drone registrations nearly tripled in Lewiston, while rising roughly 150 percent in Portland, Bangor and Auburn.
The data, recorded at the ZIP code level, showed the Portland area added more drones than anywhere else, followed by the Bangor area and then a group of other southern Maine towns.
Eustis posted the largest percentage increase over the year, rising to 14 registered hobby drones in 2018 up from 1 at the previous measure.
